GOTHAM GIRLS ROLLER DERBY REBRAND
Out of the hundreds of Roller Derby teams around the world, the Gotham Girls of New York City have established themselves as one of the most dangerous teams in the league. Although their visual language was tolerable, the original logo lacked the punch that comes with a simplified, refined mark that can function at any size and in any situation.
Considering the amount of exposure this team receives, a rebrand was essential. The branding needed to be intimidating, but clean. Their original color scheme lacked the cold, dark connotation that is often associated with Gotham, so that would be addressed as well.
While continuing the imagery of the Statue of Liberty, the redesigned logo takes influences from punk fashion, hockey team emblems, vintage comic books and woodcut poster art. The hand-drawn letters are sharp and packaged in a way that makes room for combinations with the logo marks. The color scheme is directly inspired by the Statue of Liberty’s weathered mint finish.
